Halfway: Chapter 13
KT hung up the phone with relief. It hadn’t been as hard as she thought. She wanted to get together with Seven to have lunch, so she simply called and asked. Seven accepted. Her mother would probably pitch a fit if she knew she was trying to get to know her. Whenever she brought up her name, her mother immediately had an attitude. There was a small part of her that believed her mother might be a little jealous of the relationship she would have. After all, that was a relationship she would never have.
A knock at her door interrupted her thoughts. A spontaneous visit from AJ? Even though she had made the decision to back off, it didn’t stop her from missing her long time friend. So many things had happened to her recently that she would have normally have called to share with AJ, but now, who did she have? Oh, yeah. A new sister. There was still a part of her that cringed at the thought.
It was not AJ at the door. Her mouth fell open when she saw the uninvited guest. She walked right past her and deposited her suitcase on KT’s bed. It was her mother.
“Where are you headed?” Her mother observed her attire.
“To have lunch with Seven. Why are you here?”
“Evidently to have lunch with Seven.” She primped in the mirror above AJ’s fireplace. “I’m ready when you are, darlin’” She walked back out of the door as quickly as she’d come in, leaving KT standing there, mouth hanging open and shaking her head.
Seven was early. She sat at a table in the back of the soul food restaurant KT had suggested. I guess that was her attempt to appeal to my black side, Seven thought. She was nervous. It was the first time they had seen each other since that disastrous day at AJ’s apartment. Even though she wanted a relationship with KT, her call still was a surprise.
When she looked up to see KT walking in, she realized that wasn’t her only surprise of the day. When she saw the tall redhead, she knew immediately that she was her mother. Her eyes were exact duplicates of her own. When they made it to the table, KT made the introductions, shrugging her shoulders as if to say their mother’s attendance had been out of her own control.
Katheryn Tobyn leaned across the table towards Seven. “You look just like your father. He was such a handsome man.” Seven glared at her mother. How dare her bring up my father?
KT groaned inside. What was this woman thinking? Showing up here unannounced and then saying that? Anything but that, Mom. Anything!
Seven ignored her mother and attempted to smile at KT. “So how are those projects we talked about? They coming along ok?”
“Oooh, yeah. They are coming along great. Lord knows, I needed the money and they are keeping the lights on for a couple of months. I think they like my work. They’ve hinted that they could lead to more.” KT managed to smile at Seven, but Seven wasn’t looking at her she was looking past her.
AJ went to pick up some lunch before heading back to her office. It was hard for her to miss the trio sitting at a table by the window. She tried not to stare, but she couldn’t help her numerous glances at the women. She was happy to see them smiling at each other. She felt confident in her decision to stay away from the KT and Seven. She felt proud. It was her absence in their lives that brought them together. She resisted the urge to join them. She paid for her food, grabbed her plate and left, hoping she hadn’t been noticed.
KT caught a glimpse of AJ’s back as she exited the restaurant. “Was that Alyssa-Joy? It’s been forever since I’ve seen that girl. Maybe I should ask her to come join us?” Kathryn
“No,” both AJ and Seven spoke at the same time. Kathryn looked confused. The girls looked at each other and smiled. They had finally agreed on something.
